Dale Miller, JD Snoring Story

I couldn’t get a good night’s sleep for years. I awoke stuffy and weary in my thirties. My wife and children informed me that I snored loudly every time I went to sleep. My snoring was mocked by family and friends, much like my father’s snoring was mocked before he died in his sleep in November 1983. I’m convinced that my father would have lived longer if today’s advances in sleep treatment had been available.

In the late 1980s, as a personal injury trial lawyer, I was involved in two auto accident instances where drivers fell asleep while driving during the day! Some people died, while others were seriously injured. In 1993, I scheduled my first sleep study at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, Wisconsin, after hearing those tragic accounts.

I was 50 years old in 1993. My RN wife has informed me for years that when I sleep, I stop breathing. After my first hospital sleep study, Dr. Honsotia informed me that I am a nocturnal mouth breather with sleep apnea, a hazardous condition. My RDI (respiratory distress index) was 22, which meant I stopped breathing for 10 seconds or longer 22 times per hour!

More Energy

Dr. Honsotia recommended Cpap therapy for me. A Cpap (continuous positive airway pressure) machine changed my life forever. I had more energy, however the Chin Strap caused dry mouth and jaw pain because it pulled my upper and lower teeth together. During a follow-up doctor visit, I wondered if mouth breathing was the cause of my snoring, sleep apnea, and dry mouth. Dr. Honsotia claims that: “I wish there was a comfortable remedy for mouth breathing. That would be advantageous to you.”

My RN wife and I worked together after that doctor visit to come up with a simple solution to keep my mouth closed while sleeping. We joked about how tough it could be to create a tolerable device that would keep an attorney’s mouth shut while sleeping.
