Congressional Expo

Hello, I’m Robert Bear, host of the Invention Stories Podcast. And I received this information regarding this congressional expo (above) as an email.  At first, I thought this is a great opportunity for inventors to get some great exposure for their invention.  So I began researching the Inventors Project, including interviewing one of their co-founders, James Edwards.  I’ve learned they fight for the rights of inventors.  Now, more than ever, I believe our leaders need to hear from the Invention Community!

The Inventors Project

Inventors depend on strong intellectual property laws to defend their innovations- create jobs- and secure investors. So the Inventor’s Project was created to help protect those laws through education.  Furthermore, the Inventors Project’s co-directors are James Edwards and Charles Sauer.

Episode 43…James Edwards, the Inventors Project and the Congressional Expo Recap

James Edwards begins our interview sharing the reasons he attended the University of Georgia… because his father did.  He chose to attend the University of Tennessee because they had a great journalism and mass communications program.  At the time, Jim thought he would like to become a college professor.

Growing up…

As a kid, James enjoyed building and constructing out of building blocks and tinker toys. He didn’t think of himself as an inventor,  he enjoyed working with his father‘s tools and his workshop.  James enjoyed learning and always liked reading. He shared really feeling comfortable in the classroom setting, however taking test wasn’t his strong suit. Although he didn’t become a college professor, Jim did teacher as a graduate assistant and enjoys mentoring and volunteering. He enjoys teaching somebody who wants to be there rather than being forced to.

After College

James has always been interested in public policy and history.  So upon graduation, he decided to move to Washington DC and began working in the US Senate.  Although given the entry level work to complete…he loved it.
He’s worked in several areas of heath care and intellectual property both in the public and private sectors.  This would build the foundation that led to his becoming a consultant in public policy.
Now in 2013, James founded  Elite Strategic Services.  So he primarily works with trade associations, private companies, intellectual ventures, nonprofits, start ups and early-stage companies. So he is paid to give analysis or insight into the areas regarding the areas of intellectual property and in healthcare.

Healthcare and Intellectual Property

First of all, healthcare is heavily regulated.  As a result, most of the clients he meets with underestimate the challenges they face.  And James helps people/companies understand the regulatory side of their business.  So he shares information regarding the bills working their way through congress that could potentially affect their business.  As a result, James helps factor what his clients don’t anticipate into their business plan/strategy.

I asked James what sort of changes he’d like to see on the intellectual property front. He would like to see changes in the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act. James believes this act has been bad for inventors, resulting is serious consequences, especially the post-grant review proceedings established by the patent and trademark office.  The way it was implemented makes it easy to challenge a patents validity.  The way this act has been implemented helps the infringer instead of the inventor.

 The Inventors Project

James discusses his role in the Inventors Projects.  The Inventor Project holds briefings to educate the congressional staff regarding inventing and in particular, the commercialization’s of inventions.   So about 5 years ago they started the Congressional Inventions Caucus to provide a forum for inventors to showcase innovative products. Most Importantly, they have candid and balanced conversations about regulatory and legal barriers and other obstacles to economic growth.  So they educate members and staff about the innovation ecosystem. In addition, the Caucus will seek to provide a platform for inventors, startups, and businesses (large and small) to communicate with lawmakers in order to strengthen our competitiveness, foster economic growth, and promote innovation right here in America.  So to learn more, click Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ) announced the formation of the Congressional Inventions Caucus.

In Conclusion

Finally, I want to thank James Edwards for allowing us to interview him on the Invention Stories Podcast.  We invite you attend this Congressional Expo Open House.
