Immersive Reality…Episode 40…Chandra Devam and Aris MD

Immersive Reality…Aris MD uses a patent-pending Augmented and Virtual Reality system to help bring medicine into the 21st century.

Aris MD an immersive reality company using virtual and augmented reality technology to enhance surgery, avoid complications, and save lives. They are using diagnostic images (MRI, CT, Xray, Ultrasound) and overlaying them over the patient, during surgery. This gives the surgeon a guided map of the patients anatomy and  pathology or injury. This shows the surgeon where not to cut and, more importantly, where to cut.

Every person’s anatomy differs on the outside and the inside. My heart and liver are not located exactly where your heart and liver are located. The surgeon has a general idea of where your main organs and arteries are, but not exactly. This leads to complications and avoidable death. With the Aris MD immersive reality map, they know exactly where they are going by looking at you. This saves time the patient spends in the OR under anesthetic, and saves lives.

The Aris MD Immersive Reality System allows…

The Aris MD immersive reality system allows the surgeon to practice performing the surgery in virtual space. A doctor has the ability to performed a practice surgery in virtual space as many times as they need to in order to feel confident before they operate. It’s also a great tool for medical students and residents.

immersive reality

The Aris MD immersive reality technology also provides a diagnostic component that radiologists can use before surgery. An MRI, for example, is taken in 3D space and then converted into 2D and viewed in slices. It’s better for physicians to view it in 3D where they can see the true shape and size and depth of a tumor or other pathology.

Aris MD’s  immersive reality is helping improve the efficiency and accuracy through every step of the process, from initial diagnosis to the surgical intervention.

Scott served as the Senior Principal Software Engineer for the full life-cycle of the project, managing engineers and development. He architected and developed the Dryft keyboard core (in C++), as well as versions for iOS (objective-c), Android (Java) and Windows (C++/C#). Scott also developed the Dryft demo used at TechCrunch Disrupt 2013, which placed second in the startup competition.
He have written, developed, and managed all algorithms and  patents used by Dryft. Scott created, implemented and debugged the setdown code, which allows users to rest their hands on a surface without typing. He created, implemented and debugged the core drifting routines which allow the keyboard to follow the users fingers while typing. Scott created, implemented and debugged the filtering code which deals with merging touch points on a touch capacitive surface. He was also responsible for meeting with prospective customers and investors.

Episode 40…Chandra Devam and Aris MD Recap

First of All…Aris MD was founded by Chandra and her lifelong friend, child computer prodigy Scott Edgar to help surgeons work more efficiently.  So Aris MD uses the combination of Virtual and Augmented Reality.

Virtual reality comes, naturally, from the definitions for both ‘virtual’ and ‘reality’. The definition of ‘virtual’ is near and reality is what we experience as human beings. So the term ‘virtual reality’ basically means ‘near-reality’. This could, of course, mean anything but it usually refers to a specific type of reality emulation.

And Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user’s environment in real time.  So unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it.

Most of all,  Aris MD is an immersive reality company that combines augmented and virtual reality with medicine training and surgery. So they take the diagnostic imagery (CT Scans, X-Rays, MRI’s, ultrasounds)  and they overlay it on the patient during surgery.  And this allows the surgeon to see exactly where your organs are exactly, and for example, where the tumor is.  In conclusion…when they’re cutting into the patient, they’re not cutting into an organ or artery unexpectedly.

Our Bodies are Unique

First of all…we are as different on the insides as we are on the outside. So all of our Organ placements is different.  And surgical complication is the leading cause of death in North America and a lot of that has to do with anatomical differences.  As a result, the doctor actually sees while they’re looking down on the patient your heart (for example) overlaid exactly where your heart is.
And the virtual reality component allows the radiologist to do your imaging in 3-D. So they can take the virtual image and share with the surgeon to develop a surgical plan.  As a result, the doctor has the ability to practice virtually surgery.
Especially relevant…Chandra had a gastro-procedure that was supposed to be an in and out surgery.  While in surgery, the doctor hit her artery.  As a result, Chandra almost bled to death.  So she required a blood transfusion. And she started thinking about how often this must happen and most importantly, how this could be avoided in the future.

This interview shares the challenges these co-founders face on their way to reshape how doctors perform surgery.  I can’t stress how helpful Aris MD is for doctors and patients.  We invite you to listen to this podcast.
